Swiss Pass vs. Berner Oberland Pass?

HI
My wife and I are traveling to Switzerland this coming mid-sept and will be flying into Zurich......and like to do alot of hiking around the Gimmelwald and the surrounding area......Thinking about spending about 4 days in the Swiss Alps area. We plan to leave from there to Italy. So my question is ...should I purchase a reg ticket pass to travel to Interlaken and from Interlaken to Italy....and a separate Berner Oberland pass for all the lifts, buses and etc. Or purchase a Swiss Pass and a Berner Oberland Pass. So going to stay a most 5 to 6 days in Switzerland. alot of lifts I figure though thanks shawn

Did you know that the Berner Oberland Passes and the 4-day Swiss and Flex passes are 2-for-1 in September? Definitely a deal to take advantage of. Buying both a BO regional Pass and a Swiss Pass would be pretty redundant, as you would get more days of coverage than you need. If you are going to be using lifts like First, Phingstegg, etc. to access hiking trails the BO Pass gives slightly better coverage on these. For the Schilthorn it is 50% like a Swiss pass. But the BO Pass will not get you to and from the region. You might take a look at the Transfer Ticket, which covers two journeys, one from the border or airport to your first destination in Switzerland (Mürren? Gimmelwald?) and the second journey from your last stop in Switzerland to the border (Chiasso or Domodossola if you are going into Italy). For people staying in the center, like the BO region, this is usually considerably cheaper than the point-to-point tickets. No 2-for-1 deals on the Transfer Ticket, however.

What we can "definitely" say is you don't need both. I always shy away from PASSES that lock you into 1 region such as the BO Pass. What if your plans change or the weather in the alps is just rain rain rain and you decide you would rather see a different part of Switzerland which is NOT raining??? Either a Swiss Pass or a Half Fare Card is always a safe bet.

On the other hand, here is a link to prices of mountain trains & cable car sites that are free with the Oberland Pass. The "3 free day" version at 186chf for two people could pay for itself if you visit one or two of these per day.
http://www.regiopass-berneroberland.ch/price-2012/ For most of these, the prices listed would be the price for 2 people at 1/2 price with the Swiss Pass. It is not clear from the link above whether the Oberland 2 for 1 sale price is available once you arrive, but if it is, and if the weather is good during you visit, I would definitely recommend the Wengen-Mannlichen cable car, hike to Kleine Scheidegg, train to Grindelwald, RT cable car to First, GrindleWald-Mannlichen-Wengen route for a free travel day. Schynige Platte is another worthwhile 1/2 day trip. Happy travelling!
