We will be arriving at Zurich and taking a train to Interlaken. We'll stay in Interlaken for 2 days then catch a train to Basel. Wondering if the Swiss card or Transfer ticket it a better way to go. I am aware the Swiss Card gives you 50% discount on tickets to Schilthorn and the Transfer doesn't. But does either card cover transportation on trains from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen or Stechelburg? Or is that seperate?
I'd go with the Swiss card. It does cover the trains to Lauterbrunnen and Stechelburg. Click the "railpasses" tab at the top of the page for a complete run-down of your options.
For comparison with the Swiss Transfer Ticket, a point-to-point fare from Zurich/Interlaken/Basel is CHF122 ($113). Then, it depends on where you go from there. If you are just going into Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg or up to Wengen, Gimmelwald or Murren, the point-to-point fare won't be bad over 2 days. It's only gets bad if you are goint to either or both of the mountain tops. A R/T ticket to the Jungfraujoch is about $185. Some type of Swiss pass or card will help here. The Swiss Transfer Ticket will not cover this mountain top expense. As a technical matter, a Swiss pass will cover you 100% up to the Wengen on the one side of the valley and up to Gimmelwald and Murren on the other. It only covers you 50% above those towns and villages. Again, if you are not going to either of the two mountain tops, point-to-point won't be bad over two days. FYI, there is no train to Stechelberg. Only the post bus. You can pay the driver on board.
