Kind of fake by the industry to name this sustainable. Biomass is not net zero although it has lower emission factors compared to fossil fuel. And from a holistic environmental perspective this is a real bad idea.

Germany's Federal Environment Agency is critical of the cultivation of biomass specifically for energy use, partly due to increasing competition for fertile farmland, the disproportionately high land intensity of energy production from cultivated biomass compared to other renewable energy sources, and the socio-economically problematic link to food prices on the world market. Already in 2013 they published a study about global land use for biomass resources.

Net zero in aviation is best achieved by avoiding flights.

Net zero in aviation is best achieved by avoiding flights.

That would also reduce tourism in Europe by not less than 15% (no North or South Americans), also a good thing.

We should also avoid about a fourth of the trains (except in France) because about a fourth of Europe's energy comes from fosil fuels.

Biomass can be considered net-zero if the carbon released during its combustion is recaptured through the regrowth of plants, creating a balanced carbon cycle. Unlike fossil fuels, which release ancient carbon, biomass uses recently captured atmospheric carbon. However, achieving true net-zero status for biomass requires careful management of the entire supply chain, including sustainable harvesting, replanting, and efficient transportation, to ensure that the carbon payback period doesn't negatively impact climate goals.

I do not know where you have this KPI from but I doubt it because the part of renewable energy in EU-27 was 24.5% in 2023 (source). In 2020 the part of renewable energy in Europe was around 15%, oil, coal and gas were together over 75% (source: World Energy Council).

Flights are only 4% of global emissions. We have a lot of low hanging fruit still to pick before we get to aviation...
