Do you think we will have any trouble taking a bus from Siena to San Gimignano on a Sunday?
Larry: I, too, couldn't get the English tab to work.
Susan and Monte,
I've never used the busses in the Siena & San G. area on a Sunday, but I have driven all over that area - and on Sundays! IMHO the bus service runs very, very infrequently on Sunday... we were there a few weeks ago on a Sunday, traveling from Siena to San G. and never saw a bus - going in either direction, and we drove in from Siena and then back to Siena.
I would certainly reach out to your hotel, etc for assistance on Sunday travel. In Rome, we HATE riding the bus on Sundays. We've often had to wait 45-50 minutes for a bus into town as they run ONCE an hour in our neighborhood on Sundays... as opposed to the weekday runs of 4-5 busses per hour!
In Italy, on signage denoting bus schedules, usually the "festival" schedule is also the Sunday schedule, unless otherwise noted... I would definitely want to know the # of busses running hourly, and also know when the LAST bus returns - Again in Rome, many routes do not run on Sunday...Good luck!
Ciao,
Ron
Because no one else has answered your question so far, I thought I would at least get you started on an answer. I don't have personal experience riding Siena buses on Sunday, but have read in Rick's book and also in posts on this site that buses in Tuscany on Sunday are problematical because: 1) the Sunday schedule is greatly reduced. 2) the ticket offices are often closed on Sunday so you have to buy tickets on Saturday (or perhaps there is a way to pay the driver on Sunday, I don't know). Here's the link to the SITA bus website, although I haven't been able to get the English button to function: SITAHopefully others here can give you a better answer.
Thank you for the help Kent.
I also had read what RS says about buses on Sunday, so I was wondering how difficult it would be. I'll try to navigate that web site....thanks!
CLICK HERE to see bus services from sangimignano.net. It does show frequent bus service to Poggibonsi and from Poggibonsi to San Gimignano. You do see the schedules but there is no guide that shows if it's an everyday schedule or what. These buses are so frequent, I would suggest finding the bus stop when you arrive in Siena and asking if they run their buses on Sundays.
On Kent's link to the SITA bus, I don't see service from Siena to San Gimignano. It might be there but I didn't see it. Also, I have never been able to get the English tab to work.
The SITA website shows Sunday buses every 2-3 hours between Siena and Poggibonsi, where you would then need to catch TRAIN bus #130 to San Gimignano. The TRAIN schedule is a little confusing, but it does appear to show Sunday buses running about every 2 hours. It would be best to confirm the Sunday schedules with your hotel or at the bus station in Siena.
Thanks everyone!
