Suggestion for travel from burgundy to Florence, Italy

Hi, We have 4 free days after Paris to explore Burgundy area before heading to Florence, Italy. We would like to ask for recommendations and suggestions for places to visit near Burgundy region as well as transportation from there to Florence, Italy? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dijon. It's in the middle of most everything and has a major rail station. The chorus will now sing the Beaune Anthem, but it's a short skip from Dijon and would drive you up the wall if you had to spend more than a night there.

@Ed and @Sam, thanks. We have looked at Beaune as my husband loves French wine but can not find flights from Dijon to Florence, Italy for 6/16/13. Any suggestions to get to Florence, italy? Thanks to you both.

Dijon doesn't have much of an airport. To get to Florence the fastest options are: Take a train to one of the following airports: Paris (CDG, ORY, BVA), Lyon (LYS), Geneva (GVA). Fly from one of the above cities to Florence (FLR) or Pisa (PSA) (Pisa is only 1 hr from Florence). CDG-FLR (AirFrance Cityjet) ORY-FLR (Vueling) GVA-FLR (Darwin Airlines) LYS-FLR (HOP!) CDG-PSA (HOP!) ORY-PSA (Easyjet)
BVA-PSA (Ryanair) Paris and Lyon are faster to reach from Dijon. I think they even have a TGV from Dijon to the CDG airport station.

There are trains taking about 9 hours, including a sleeper. 9 hours is not great, but not that much more than taking the train to Paris or Lyon airports, flying, and then getting into Florence. Dijon versus smaller towns probably depends on the kind of sightseeing you would like. To me, the main attractions of Burgundy are rural and a town like Semur or Beaune or even smaller is ideal. But Ed is right, it can get old in four days, so maybe plan to stay in more than one place. Pick your locations based on what you want to do.

Ed and Adam,
Thank so much for your help. Originally we were thinking about two nights in Beaune then Venice, Italy for two nights and the following stop will be Florence, but the transportation to Florence is easier to find then Venice. I did not plan far ahead so now I am crunching for plan ideas. A lesson learned for future trip to Europe.

There is a night train from Dijon that arrives in Venice at 9:30 in the morning.

You should check the archives to see what people have said about their nights on this night train. There have been a few threads about using night trains. We used to take them before the TGVs came into service 30 years ago. They are hot, noisy, and in second class you sleep on a plastic covered plank with 5 others in the compartment. We liked them back then and even shared the plank with our kids when they were babies. In first class you could sleep in style in a bed with sheets. Now, I think I'd look into the Lyon-Florence flight.
