Is there a subway pass or any special offers for the metro in Rome? I am planning on leaving in 2 weeks and spending a week in Rome. I have heard of a Roma Pass, but I'm not sure what it covers.
Rome Bus, Tram & Metro Ticket Prices Ticket options are: •B.I.T. € 1.00. Standard ticket, valid for one Metro ride or 75 minutes on all buses. •B.I.G. € 4.00. Daily ticket, valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within Rome. •B.T.I. €11.00. 3-day tourist ticket, valid for everything listed under the B.I.G ticket.
•C.I.S. €16.00. Weekly ticket
In general the subway is not very useful for the main sightseeing areas. Only two lines, tend to be over crowded. and seldom go anywhere you want to go. Walking is best for the core area and use the buses when you want to go further.
It's not like that. Colosseum, Termini rail station, Via Appia, EUR and Vatican are among sites within walking distance of a subway station. And they are much safer than buses.
To expand a bit on info...the Roma Pass is a combined museum/transit pass. It gives you entrance to a couple museums and three days on the Metro system. The Metro in Rome is a combined system. The same ticket allows transit on the subway, buses, and suburban trains within specific Zones. The subway and connecting trains are good for sights away from city center or hop from the Collosium to the Vatican or down to Ostica Antica. Your feet and buses will be more valuable in central Rome. If you will be using the transit system 4 or 5 times a day, then a pass may pay. For the week, there are single trip tickets at 1 euro, a day pass for about 4 euro, and a weekly pass at around 16 euro. Whether the museum fees justify the Roma pass you will need to figure out, might save you some time waiting in line though. Of all the options, I found a pass and the ability to hop on and off buses and trams very handy. it easily paid for itself, though I was staying just outside central Rome in the Trastevere.
John, You might want to have a look at Ron's excellent website. There's LOTS of information there on getting about in Rome. You could also check your local Library and have a look at the Rome or Italy Guidebooks, as they have lots of great information on sightseeing, avoiding queues, good restaurants, etc. I was recently in Rome, and found that the B.I.G. tickets were the most flexible option as they cover both the Metro and Buses. I wasn't using public transit every day, so a weekly pass wouldn't have been as cost effective. How are you planning to get from the airport into the city? If using the Leonardo Express, be sure to validate your ticket! Happy travels!
Passes expire at midnight - the all-day pass at midnight the day validated and the 3-day pass at midnight on the 3rd day. To maximize the benefit of the pass, avoid validating it late in the day. Haven't used the weekly pass, so not certain whether it's good for 7 days or until midnight on a certain day of the week. Ron in Rome's website likely says.
