Stop in Iceland

To avoid the hasels of the US lines at AMS stopover in Iceland both ways over night or for a few days and be done with the long lines .

At AMS you are a Schengen pasenger and can arrive 2 hours before the flight. You then go to KEF and arrive domestically. At KEF you clear EU exit control and have less of a hassle the reverse going to Europe clear EU Customs at KEF and go to the Blue Lagoon to get over jetlag spend a night or so then continue to Europe. Book an open jaw ticket.

No worries about connecting in KEF with crowds. Its worth the extra cost.

It is not all fun & games at KEF. Travelers who've never been though there should be aware that many of the gates do not have boarding bridges (e.g. Jetway®). Also, elevators and escalators are in very short supply inside the terminal. That means that travelers will go up & down multiple stairways, as well as do the mad dash in & out of buses. Not a problem, if one has very minimal carry-ons. But it could be a hassle if you are dragging bags; and nasty weather will make it worse. Inside the terminal, the gate situation is a bit confusing since travelers are not actually allowed inside the gate areas until close to boarding time. Instead, multiple plane-loads of people attempt to line up in the concourse halls, or simply mill about in the hallway with almost no place to sit. So there are some downsides to flying through KEF. BTW, see comments in thread "Anyone been to Keflavik lately?".

Just went through there 2 weeks ago and again on Sat. It was fine. The construction that was happening 2-3 years ago seems to be done and you move through smoothly and quickly.
Yes, there are steps and buses, but so what? I'll take this small airport over places like JFK or Newark or Dallas, any day.
