I’ll be travelling to Stockholm in August before a conference in Gothenburg later in the month. Could someone familiar with the Sweden rail system shed some light on ticket purchasing? Would it be better to purchase before arrival, or could I purchase the ticket upon my arrival? I’ll end up needing a return ticket as my flights depart from Stockholm. Thanks for your assistance in this regard.
Buy the tickets in advance. If you try to buy tickets the same day or a few days before they might be very expensive and there is a risk that many departures are sold out. Use www.sj.se and avoid 3rd party booking sites.

There are two companies running trains on that route. (There used to be a third, but they stopped...)
There is the state railways: www.sj.se, and there is the private MTRX: mtrx.se
Have a look at both. While single trains occasionally do sell out both companies offer enough departures that you can expect to always be able to travel more or less when you want, but booking in advance does save you some money.
