Still planning on flying?

Hello,

Just wanted to know if people are still planning on traveling?

I have a flight this Tuesday from Ssn Francisco to London and though I really want to go, part of me is considering not going.

Any advice?

Much appreciated/

There's no reason not to go. My friend just flew back to Spain on Friday with absolutely no problems anywhere.

We're leaving for Spain in a couple of weeks! Wouldn't think of postponing our trip as long as planes are flying. We're hoping for the best and looking forward to our travels!

OK Laris, tell us "why" you would choose not to go?

I flew to London yesterday. Had a great day here today. The weather is fabulous. Don't know why anyone would cancel now. What are your concerns?

Thank you for your responses...

Here is my main concern:

flying back from Croatia June 1st and worried that another disaste might happen which would suck due to me starting a new job. (fresh out of college....) silly I know

Laris, How much time do you have between the day you return and the day that you start your new job?

If you are really concerned about the possibility of missing your first day of your new job, you could consider changing the return date on your ticket so that you come back a little earlier. This would give you a buffer just in case. You will likely pay a penalty to the airline for this.

I have about a week of gap.

Thanks for all your help. Oh and I was also curious if flights throughout Europe are operating properly.

Will the backlog of travelers be an issue? Thanks again :)

A "disaster" could happen anytime, anyplace.... there's no way to predict the future.

The backlog shouldn't impact the OP.

A week is a pretty decent buffer. Obviously no one can predict the future, but I would feel pretty comfortable with a week.

There were quite a few people on my flight who had been impacted by the volcano. The man who sat next to me was supposed to fly home on Monday the 19th. He was on my flight on the 24th. He was stuck 5 extra days.

This was obviously an unusual situation. In years of traveling, I don't think I've ever been delayed more than 12 hours. And there have been some years where I have traveled a lot. One year I went through passport control more than 40 times.

One more thing ...
You asked if flights were back to normal...

They are according to BBC news here. The only real difference on my flight was that it was completely filled and there were quite a few people on the standby list so they called a lot of names in the gate area. There seemed to be more UK citizens than US on the flight. The non EU queue in immigration was shorter than I have seen in the past.

Hi Laris,

I am scheduled to leave Saturday and so excited. Wouldn't even consider cancelling my flight! Got a great tip from another poster. Visit www.nats.co.uk gives you up to date info. Everything is looking good right now.

If you have a ticket on a flight that isn´t canceled... don´t worry and enjoy your trip.

Laris,

I agree with the others. While conditions could change at any time, I don't see any reason to cancel now. The airlines are still dealing with a bit of "backlog" but most flights seem to be operating normally.

I'm scheduled to leave in mid-May, and won't change my plans unless the airlines cancels my flights.

As you're starting a new job, it would be a good idea to travel now as it could be a while before you get another chance!

Happy travels!

Laris...flew out of Montreal Friday, transited thru CDG Saturday morning to Madrid....no problems whatsoever. If you've got a week's buffer before the new job starts.....go for it!!

PS- look through these forums, and you´ll see several threads with people worrying about whether or not to cancel their trip because of the volcano... and you´ll see plenty of responses from people who have arrived in Europe without complications (including this poster, who is currently enjoying some beautiful spring weather in eastern Belgium). There are no guarantees in travel, except this one: I guarantee you will later regret it if you cancel your trip.
