Has anyone stayed overnight at one of the hotels connected to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam? I am considering booking a flight from Rome back to the US that has an overnight layover in Amsterdam. The idea of passing the layover in a hotel room sounds a lot nicer than trying to sleep by the gate, but I'm concerned about whether I'd have to go back through security, etc. Or would going to a hotel outside the airport be a better option? Thanks!
Yotel has rooms within the security area of the departure area of the airport, so you don't need to reclear security. They rent their rooms by the hour. Since they're adjacent to the food court area, there's easy pickings for eating and drinking. And they beat the heck out of trying to sleep at a gate!
Unfortunately in Schiphol each gate has its own security so you will have to clear security again no matter what. The line at the gate for departure to the US goes especially slow because the agents are taking each passenger aside asking all these stupid questions.
Try Citizen M one block outside the terminal. A little quirky, but very clean and only $95/night double.
The rail connection to Schiphol is so good that I would just find a room at a B&B in Haarlem close to the train station.
If you're in Haarlem the 300 bus is better to get to the airport than the walk to the station and either change at Leiden or Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Centraal.
I was there last March and I stayed at the Isis, less than one mile away. There is a free shuttle that runs on schedule until about 1:30 am. My room was about 75 Euros including taxes and was very comfortable, though smaller than a typical American hotel room. I didn't stay at the hotel in the airport, but I stopped there to take a shower (after arriving) in a very cramped shower room. Looked like a lot of young people were staying there.
Depending on your flight times, I'd agree with staying in Haarlem or even Amsterdam, but even if you stay near or at the airport, I'd spend the evening in one of those cities - such an easy train or bus ride. Now, if it's a late arrival and an early departure, probably stay at one of the nearby options proposed here.
Calm down, people. I'd NOT organize a travel to a small B&B for an overnight layover. Here is the deal: the Rome-Amsterdam flight is an "intra-Schegen" one, meaning no customs and border security checks at either place (it is almost like an US domestic flight). You will have to clear international security upon departure from AMS to US. There are many hotels near Schiphol. Citizen M is a good budget option, all major chains have their hotels there, some within walking distance, some served by shuttles. If you arrive early, you can go to Amsterdam Centraal for a stroll or a nice(r) dinner easily, as there is an underground train station at the airport (tickets € 4,10, travel time 22min). In any case, just stay at an airport hotel and save yourself the hassle of a train trip before your departure.
Hey Nicole, Last June we ended up getting bumped for our flight back to the states from Amsterdam. Just to agree with the previous post, we stayed at the Citizen M. Loved it Quirky, yes you could say that. But clean and the staff was very pleasant We missed booking on line from the airport and could have gotten is for 5 or 10€ cheaper but I think we paid 90 or 95€. We found it beat hanging around the airport Enjoy your trip
