has anyone a good suggestion as we're with two kids, so want just a decent place close by either taxi or tube.

The hotel hoppa is the heathrow shuttle bus that runs between the terminals and the local airport hotels. There are a wide range of choices to choose from.

I stay at Heathrow Lodge on Old Bath Road, very close to the airport. Their earliest shuttle is 6 am, but a taxi from there shouldn't cost a lot since it is so close to the airport.

Jury's Inn is adjacent to Heathrow. It's served by the shuttle bus, but frankly, it's also so close to the tube station that it's easier to take the tube.
