We will be traveling to Edinburgh in mid-September and are planning to take a day tour North in addition to seeing the city's sights. Is it worth it to travel outside of Edinburgh for one night to see more of the country or will we see enough on the day tour? I have been to Glasgow before so am not interested in going there or to St. Andrews.
With only four days I'd stay put and just do day trips for this reason. Every time you change locations you almost always lose more time than anticipated. Even if you have a car, there is still the packing up, checking out, travel time itself, checking in, and unpacking. If you are going by train there is the additional time getting to the station and the waiting time. Just something to think about.
I would definitely anchor in Edinburgh. There is enough there to fill 3 days. Consider a Rabbie's day trip to see Stirling Castle or another site. You can easily find Rabbie's online. Many options. I have done 2 of their day trips from Edinburgh and really enjoyed them. Good Value.
I just returned from the UK where I spent 3 days in Edinburgh. One day I took the "Wee Red Bus" up into the highlands. Highly recommend this. Also, mention RS for the discount! One day for the castle and one day to walk the Royal Mile with my RS app/audio tour (I was alone). Holyrood Palace was closed because because Princess Anne was there. So I walked to the Portrait Gallery and spent several hours there and then I took the orange bus (hop on/hop off) audio tour around the city for fun. Tons of stuff to do in Edinburgh. Enjoy your trip.
We also have just returned having spent four nights in Edinburgh. We also took a Wee Red Bus day tour ,The Best of Scotland, which was fun and a good value. I'm not a tour person and had hesitations but it was well paced, 13 people, and never felt "stuck on a bus" (my worry). One day we took ourselves by train to Stirling where we got on a tour of the castle and then wandered on our own afterwards. Very easy and not far from Edinburgh. There's plenty to do and we could have spent more time in the city, but chose to see some other places in our short stay on our first time in Scotland. I know nothing more of Linlithgow than the little reading I did, but it looked nice from the train and if I'd had more time would have considered a day trip there. Safe travels.
Thank you so much for your comments. Your advice is very helpful. This is my first time posting and it's great to see how easy it is to access RS travelers.
