starting Eurail pass

Hello,

I'm very excited we are going to Europe for a month. Our first Trip. We are going to France, Germany and The benelux countries. I bought a German Benelux pass. I will be in strasbourg when we leave for Germany. Can I start my pass there and just pay for the France portion from Strasbourg to the German border?

thank

Yes you can....just ask at the station for a ticket across the border. But once there, you'll have to get off and have your pass validated at that first German station. Depending on what kind of train you're taking, that may take you some ways into Germany, and you'll have to plan to catch a following train from there so you have time to get off and get the pass validated.

I don't think you can validate a German Rail pass in France. Kehl is the first stop in Germany after leaving Strasbourg, and the fare from Strasbourg should be around €3,50. Unfortunately, express trains going up and down the Rhein don't stop in Kehl, and I suspect few express trains from Strasbourg stop there either.

The next stop, Offenburg, should be a stop for almost all, if not all, express trains on the Rhein route or some of the express trains (although not TGVs) coming from Strasbourg, so it would be the best place to get off and get your pass validated. You'll likely have to change trains in Offenburg anyway. The fare from Strasbourg to Offenburg is around €7.

Thanks,

it just occurred to me that we will returning our rental car to Strasbourg after we have driven around france and in through some parts of germany. We will be leaving baden baden that morning so I can get the pass validated there.

does that sound like it would work?
