Stansted, Luton, Gatwick Questions; Ryanair vs EasyJet

We're traveling from London to Lisbon in early September, and non-stop flights are available from a dizzying array of airports. The best bets look like they fly out of Stansted, Luton, and Gatwick. We've flown out of Gatwick, and I don't recall any problems. Are the others as easy to get to and to find one's way around in?

On a related topic, the flights with the best combination of price and departure times seem to be EasyJet and Ryanair. We flew EasyJet last year from Nice to Venice, and paid extra for more room and a carry-on. Does Ryanair work the same way, or will we have to check our bags? We travel with one medium sized backpack and one smaller personal item each.

We're looking for a non-stop flight that leaves later morning or early afternoon, arriving in Lisbon mid or late afternoon.

Thanks for you input.

Stansted is the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street. The station is a bit like Gatwick where it is right at the terminal- a 50 minute journey time-

The airport was purpose designed to be a very easy one to navigate through.

Luton airport is on the Thameslink line from the South coast calling at London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras (a 33 to 45 minute journey from St P), very frequent. That goes to Luton Airport Parkway
The train from London to Luton Airport Parkway [station code LTN] is £17.50 turn up and go but off peak advance fares can be found as low as £2.70.
From tomorrow the new DART fast automatic train opens (replacing a bus from the end of March) from the station for the 1 1/2 miles to the terminal, which you can buy inclusive of your ticket. It will take over from Heathrow Express as Britain's most expensive train at £4.90 for the ride.
To include the DART book to Luton Airport [station code LUA] and the DART is only a £2.40 add on for now (may change) although you can't currently add that on to a cheap advance fare, only to a full fare ticket (or that's what a test booking showed just now, press reports say it should be able to be added on to a cheap advance fare).
The new terminal is not long open. It is reputed to be a vast improvement on it's predecessor, which was awful (I've not been there, supposed to be there sometime in April, flying in from Inverness on a £16 Easyjet fare) although I have heard that it is a shopping mall with an airport added on, like so many modern airports. How fair that is I don't know.

On Ryanair the cheapest fare is an underseat bag only, level 2 fare is a cabin bag and an under seat bag [both to strict sizes] and level 3 fare is an under seat bag and checked bag.

Wow, isn31c, thank you! This is just what I needed to know. I'll spend some more time looking at flight options before I pull the trigger, but you've set my mind at ease.

Thank you!

We flew RyanAir and the “extras” are very clearly stated.. They sent several emails prior to the travel date explaining their rules and extras. On time, no problems.

I just checked the ThamesLink website; it looks like we can only buy tickets three months out. I'll check back later.

One of our hotel choices in London is in easy walking distance of St Pancras, so that will work well.

Thanks again for your help.

sorry, Jane, months too early for the train booking. Timetables change twice a year in June and December, and you usually can't cross that line until they are set; Thameslink is a commuter train - you'll know that when you sit down - and people just don't buy those tickets that far out. There are no reservations and it can't sell out. A week or two ahead will be fine for lower fares.

Thanks, Nigel. I tend to fret about loose ends.
