Spain To Seek Modification of Schengen Treaty

Madrid (AFP) - Spain wants to see the Schengen treaty modified to allow border controls to be restored to limit the movements of Islamic fighters returning to Europe from the Middle East, a report said on Sunday.

Spain wants to thwart militant Islamists . . .
{Edit: . . . by preventing the free movement of Islam extremists through Europe.}

As a traveller, how do you feel about this idea for all the Schengen area now that Brussels {Edit: . . . thwarted, (not incurred/WSJ 16/01/15)} terrorist attack since this article came out?

@colette
What terror attack in Brussels are you referring to?
Spain already has border controls for bad guys returning from camps in Yemen as Yemen is outside the Schengen Zone.

But if restoring border controls from other Schengen countires means I can view the manneken pis is relative safety, I say thank you!

TY Michael. The correction is made. Last night's news talked about an attack in Brussels. This morning the tele news reported 5 of 13 people have been taken into custody regarding the Belgium incident.

My question still stands . . . how do you feel about the gist of the article I posted?
(Plus I am knocking some SPAM off the board.)

Sorry, this article does not make much sense: "Spain wants to see the Schengen treaty modified to allow border controls to be restored to limit the movements of Islamic fighters returning to Europe from the Middle East, a report said on Sunday, January 11."
Are they saying they want to reintroduce border controls from other EU countries (France, Portugal)? But, they already have the right under Schengen to put in temporary checks in special circumstances. Are they saying they want the right to restrict citizens of other EU countries from entering Spain?

This is newspaper jibberish which is nothing to do with anything that might affect a tourist or other traveller.

Finally, the website listed is in Colombia (http://www.news.nom.co/ - ".co" = Colombia). I would trust the report more of it came from a Spanish source. Journalist have an unlimited abilty to misunderstand and mangle the truth, and Journalists outside Europe appear to totally misunderstand what the EU actually is.

To quote Chris (above) " Journalists have an unlimited ability to misunderstand and mangle the truth." As do many others.

Thank you for your post & the URL, Michael.

I do not know how a change in the Schengen Treaty would affect the general citizenry of Europe, Chris.

The proposal came from several politicians in other EU member states as well.
The reason would be to force potential terrorists to pass more than one control to get back to Europe, therefore increasing the chance to intercept them. For example many nowadays come through Turkey. Basically once they pass the border into Greece or Bulgaria, they now have free access to all other states part of Schengen without ever having to pass a border control again. The same is true for those who might come on boats via Sicily or Spain. Basically they can go anywhere with no further check.

This isn't surprising given recent events, and changes to border control arrangements will likely be coming in future. This will be a method to track the movement of individuals within the E.U. as well, and with current computer technology all of the member states will have access to the information. Some of the now-shuttered border stations may be re-opened and I suspect that border checks on trains will also increase.
