Southwest Airlines Gets the Saturday Night Live Treatment

I remember decades ago when it was said a company knew it was in trouble when Mike Wallace showed up on their doorstep. SNL seems to be the current equivalent...

I saw that last Saturday night, and having been caught in the Southwest chaos Dec 25 and 26, I was finally able to laugh about this man- made disaster.

Ouch for Southwest! That is, if any of them watch SNL anymore.

Already old news. I flew four legs on SWA ten days ago with no glitches and each flight was 100% full. So much for the people who swore off flying them again.

Southwest has, on net, been a positive force in every market they've entered by forcing the stodgy legacies prices down. They have been a successful disruptor, saving fliers tons of $$$. Plus their culture is similar to Trader Joes, which seems to resonate with a lot of people. They underinvested in IT, they didn't drag an elderly man off the plane (that would not make for a funny SNL skit). Their luggage and change fee policies are still top-notch. Yeah, I'm not giving up on them either...they've earned a lot of goodwill over the years to draw down on.

Eric, thanks for posting this. I rarely watch SNL these days, but the Southwest spoof is funny :)

With freezing rain making its way across the nation this morning and predictions for another wave tomorrow, local news reported many more SW cancellations today than other carriers............so let's hope it does not develop into a mini-repeat of what happened over the holidays. Time will tell..........................

Safe, smooth travels to all of you traveling this week, regardless of your carriers or destinations.

Thanks for posting. We really enjoyed this(since we weren't the people affected). My favorite part was bags being a certain color for the destinations.

I guess I didn't find this SNL bit that funny - except for the very last second. Not because I don't think Southwest is worthy of ridicule, only that I don't think it's very clever. SNL used to be so funny (I mean, in the last few years), but this is a rebuilding year. So many cast members have left. I'll bet this would have been a lot funnier if it had been done by SNL three years ago...

I was affected by the SW meltdown. I didn't get home for the holidays as a result and spent hours at the airport on Christmas day for nothing - but at least I got to go home, luckily not stuck in some other city.

Still, I flew SW a few weeks later and will again soon. I have no plans to switch airlines. I still love flying them. No one else can come close to their flexible policies. I'm sure they will get their act together soon.

Speak for yourself. I just booked several business travel trips. Didn't even bother to look at SW. I can't risk my client meetings to their 1980's IT operations!

Out of Atlanta we generally have two non-stop options. Delta and SW.

I am sticking to Delta.... free changes? Yep Free luggage? yep Seat assignments? yep Recovery from a storm in under two weeks? yep

SW is no longer cheaper so why would I risk my trip on them?

Carol, I don't fly SW for business, but with points via credit card promotions, I've been flying SW basically for almost free for many years, several times a year. Their Rapid Rewards awards program is incredibly flexible. I can't imagine flying with any other airline again domestically, if I can help it. (Not having a fixed assigned seat is a benefit to me, actually.)
