We are driving from Madrid to southern spain and need to know where to stay as a home base to be able to see Cordoba, Granada, Rhonda, Costa Del Sol. We will also stay 2 nights in Seville but have 4 nights that are not booked to see the above 4 towns. Your help appreciated. Thank you Jeanne in USA
It would appear you may not understand the two hundred and some kilometres long Costa del Sol is not a town, therefore no fairly central point can be determined. You could easily do the 'triangulation' yourself when you decide where or what you want from the Costa. As a generality probably anywhere I might suggest as a base will likely be a two hour journey there and two back (or more) to what is on your wish list. It is a four hour drive Madrid to Cordoba, five hours Madrid to Seville, never mind finding your accommodation. Does the travel time take a chunk out of what appears to be a very short five days/six nights?
And where do you want to be at the end of this?
As Neil said, Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) is an area, not a town. Cordoba is only about 90 minutes from Seville, if that helps. You can use www.viamichelin.com to see the distances between places, as well as approximate fuel and toll costs.
Picking a home base is a bit tricky - Antequera could be a possibility.
Both Cordoba and Ronda are under 2 hours driving from Seville. If it were me, I would stay another night in Seville and do the above, and then 3 nights in Granada, from where you can do day trips to places like Nerja and Malaga. I am guessing by Costa del Sol, you may mean Malaga.
Take the ave from Madrid to malaga and rent a car at the train station. Base out of Malaga. Then take train back to Madrid. This what we did last October for two weeks. Ez drive to all your destinations from Malaga.
Be sure and obtain international drivers license from AAA. This is the law in Spain.
We just got back from driving in Southern Spain to Seville, Grananda, Toledo, and back to Siguenza. If you are driving be sure to bring a gps with a spain memory card. We had Garmin and bought the Spain/Portugal card from Amazon. Without this we would have had a horrible trip. The streets often are not marked and the maps for the historical/Unesco world heritage sites are a maze. If I had to do this again, I would travel by train and rent an apartment in Madrid.
Have fun, the Spanish people are so, so friendly and kind!Twice strangers got in our car and directed us to our hotel when the gps and maps were useless. I wouldn't do this in the US , but somehow in Spain it felt safe.
