What is the easiest/least expensive way to get from Sorrento to the Lake District in Italy, specifically Varenna? Thanks!
Easiest = rent a car and drive. Least expensive: train to Napoli + low cost flight to Milano + train to Varenna. A good compromise = regional train to Salerno + high-speed train(s) to Milano + train to Varenna ====== BTW: there is no such thing as "lake district" in Italy. If you use that terminology, most people will not have a clue what you are talking about.
Cindy, The "easiest/least expensive way" that I'd choose is: > Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples (ie: depart at 07:55, arrive Napoli Centrale at 09:00). > EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita from Naples to Milan. There are direct trains (no changes) several times a day (ie: depart Napoli Centrale at 09:50, arrive Milano Centrale at 14:45). > Regionale from Milano Centrale to Varenna. There are departures about every two hours, with a travel time of 1H:03M. Happy travels!
You might also consider bus to Rome then train up to Milan then train to Varenna.
Or ferry to Naples fly toMilan train to Varenna.
