I need to get from Scoglio, Switzerland to Trieste, Italy on Sunday, September 14, 2014. Is it possible to accomplish this in one day and what is the suggested travel route? I need to catch an early bus on Monday, September 15, 2014 from Trieste to Rovinji, Croatia. I was going to take a ferry but they do not seem to be scheduled on Monday and even possibly Tuesday during this time since it is the end of the summer schedule. I am open to other suggestions. Thank you.
Do you mean the Soglio, part of Bregaglia in Graubünden? Or Scoglio as in your question? If so, I can't find a Scoglio.
If the former it is 17 kilometers (11 mi) from the Italian town of Chiavenna at the foot of the Val Bregaglia, and 39 km (24 mi) from Sankt Moritz in the Engadine valley which is reached via the Maloja Pass. These two towns provide the nearest railway stations.
How will you be arriving at Soglio?
In any event, it will take about 8 hours as far as Milan. The earliest start you can make is a 7:22 bus to Promontogno, Posta, then a bus to Sankt Moritz, train (very scenic) to Thusis where it is back on the bus to Bellinzona with something over an hour to grab lunch, then Eurocity train to Milano Centrale for arrival there at 14:50. Now you need a fast train to Trieste. 15 minutes is a bit tight at Milano Centrale, especially if you aren't at the front, but doable. There is a 15:05 Frecciabianca (all reservation, cheap non changeable tickets well in advance) which arrives Trieste Centrale at 19:46 with one 25 minute change onto the Regionale at Venezia Mestre. Although the train from Milano ends at the edge of the Grand Canal at V. Santa Lucia and the one to Trieste starts there, there is only one minute between and you would never make the train if you tried to change in V.Santa Lucia.
So - either take the next Regionale an hour later from Venice, change in Mestre, or wait 2 hours in Milano and get a train direct to Trieste, no changes. If the 15 minute connection in Milano is too tight for you, you could take the hour later one (also change at Mestre), or 2 hours later no change.
So, yes, it CAN be done in one VERY LONG day. Complete with buses and various trains and an early start and late finish - that's one VERY long day. Not sure I'd want to do it, but hey ho.
OMG...thank you very much. I think I will rethink and replan this and do it in 2 days rather than 1 day. what was i thinking...lol!!!
One more question about Soglio travel. Is this the best route to get to Trieste? I have limited time and this will take two days of travel which is why I'm asking. I checked out airfares but they seem very expensive.
Thank you.
