I am thinking of picking up a rental in Munich the last week of March. From there, we would drive to Berchtesgaden and perhaps Salzburg, before heading north along the Romantische Straße.
My question is - would I need snow tires in Berchtesgaden/Salzburg, and would the rental company need to know this ahead of time?

Steve, having been in Munich in March, I don't think you will need snow tires. We used Hertz last November and they only have some cars with snow tires. When we arrived, they only had a few vehicles left with snow tires.
Check the weather and if you do need them let the agency know a few days before you arrive. A word of caution. If you go to an area that requires snow tires such as southern Bavaria, if you don't have snow tires on your car and are involved in an accident, the insurance company won't pay the claim.
