Smoking on trains in Austria, Italy, Croatia

Hi all. The last post I read on this was about 2 years ago, so I'm hoping the situation is as good or better than then. Anyone have recent experience with smoking, or not, on trains from Austria to Italy and Austria to Zagreb or Llubljana? I can't stand any amount of smoke - stale or fresh- for a several hour train ride, but it might be my only option to get from point a to point b on my trip.

I believe Austria and Italy are 100% smoke free. I know nothing of Slovenia and Croatia.

Currently, 15 EU countries have comprehensive smoke-free laws in place. Ireland, the UK, Greece, Spain and Hungary have the strictest smoke-free provisions with a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places, on public transport and in workplaces.

Austria: Transport - Banned, except in segregated smoking rooms in airports.

General Workplace, Enclosed Public Places, Health Care Facilities, Hotels and Accommodation, Residential Care - Banned with exceptions.

Italy: General Workplace Enclosed Public Places, Health Care Facilities, Education Facilities, Public Transport, Residential Care, Prisons - Smoking allowed only in separately ventilated smoking rooms.

Technically in Croatia smoking on trains is banned; however, it is basically never enforced. I've seen people smoking beside no smoking signs and employees walk by and say nothing. Everyone I saw smoking did so right beside an open window-so there's that positive.

People aren't supposed to smoke on any of those trains which is merciful considering my husband and I and our family all have allergies including smoke. In practice, some trains seem lax in enforcing this unless you make a complaint. We have recently used trains on those routes without running into smoking (except in the restrooms we have smelled it!) so carry a handkerchief and even get a medical mask at a medical supply store to use in there and do complain if you see anyone smoking. You can also buy private accommodations on trains to keep smokers away.

Beware of Croatian train station lobbies!
I had to wait for a delayed train in Zagreb, and
even in the "No Smoking" waiting areas, there were
quite a few smokers!

Granted, it was a rather a chilly night, so that might
have been the reason...I did move to another lobby
and was fine until they locked it up for the night!

Ended up on the platform where, ironically, there
weren't many smokers!

I agree with the other poster, there isn't much
enforcement of "no smoking" in Croatia yet...
