Slow Train from Geneva to Northern Italy

We are arriving in Geneva and plan to spend most of our time in Italy. I'd like to take the slow train from Geneva and spend one night between Geneva and Lake District (traveling with kids- 11+ but still think trying not to do to much day one is a good idea). Any rec's on where to stay? Also when I put in Geneva/Milan on the site it seems to show just express options, is there a way on the swiss rail site to designate local trains? Also swiss pass lets you take one child per adult free, but don't know if it is valid outside Switzerland and haven't found a Switzerland/Italy combo.. so is point to point cheaper? Will likely fly easy jet from Rome for our return so only need a one way train ticket.

Put in Kandersteg under "via" and you'll see one possible option using regional trains. Kandersteg would be about 3 hours from Geneva and 3 from Milan (roughly). It would make a good overnight stop; kids love the rodelbahn up at the lake there. Check it out at www.oeschinensee.ch A Swiss pass is not valid outside Switzerland and would not be worth it for the short time you will be in Switzerland. You might read up on the Junior Card; I don't know if it will help you if you are traveling on P2P tickets but it's worth investigating.
