Slovenia and Dalmatian Coast Travel

We are planning a 7 day trip to Slovenia and the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. We were thinking of reserving a hotel for 2 nights in Bled and making Bled our base for going to the Karst region. Since we are flying out of Venice, and we'll only have 4 days to spend in Croatia, we were not planning to go any further south than Split. We are looking for a recommendation on a good town in Istria or anywhere up to Split to make our base. Or do you think it's safe to go without a reservation in July? Your advice on our itinerary is very much appreciated. Many thanks!!

Istria and Split are quite far apart, so I'd suggest either spending 2 nights each in Istria and Split, or picking one for 3 nights and spending your 4th night at Plitvice. Rovinj is nice for a stay in Istria. Sounds like you'll have a car, but skip Istria if you won't. All my trips to Croatia have been in September or early Ocotber, so I cannot comment on need for July reservations.

Just curious...where are you staying in Bled? My husband and I were there a few years ago and stayed in a wonderful B&B there. We hope to be back when my son's old enough to try some hiking there.

Sounds like you have a great trip planned. And just for planning purposes, if you're driving from Bled to Venice, although I think it should only take 3.5 hrs, if you go on a Saturday be prepared for LONG wait at the Slovenia/Italy border.
