My friend and will have to sleep in the Athens airport because of a long layover over night. Does anyone have any suggestions to make the best of the situation? We are both a little nervous about safety of our belongings if we both sleep. I looked I can't seem to find a cheap hotel anywhere.

I have done it, near the McDonalds, which I believe is described on the web link above. The downside was cleaning staff taking their break in that area at 2 or 3 a.m. and conducting loud conversations. There is no cheap hotel near Athens airport.
I had a similar experience as Laura's in another airport. I finally got up and went over to the cleaning ladies and told them there were some people here who had been traveling for more than twenty-four hours and they would like to get some rest and that I was one of them. They moved the conversation elswhere.
I tried to sleep in the Athens airport on my very first trip to Europe - over 20 years ago, so I can't say what they're doing now. I CAN tell you that, back then, it was a big no-no to sleep over near the gates where we were. Whenever it looked like we were nodding off, two armed police officers came over and woke us up.
