sleeping accommodations on trains.

I am a 70 year old guy , somewhat stout of stature, and I am looking for a bit of a review of the classes of sleeping accommodations on overnight trains. How bad is just a couchette ; how much difference is there between a 6 birth room and a 4 birth room ?

A 6 birth room is the same size as a 4 birth room except the bunks are stacked 3 high in the 6 birth and only 2 high in the 4 birth. Scroll down this article from seat61 to look at German City Night Line (top of the line night trains) to get an idea of the accommodations.

Thanks Sam -- that is exactly what I was looking for. I gather that the 'couchetts' are reserved individually ? I am hoping not to have to climb a ladder so should I just hope for kindness or can the attendant make accommodations ? Or are there other conventions that I should be aware of ?
