Six days in Rome, marathon in the middle!

A friend and I plan to run the Rome marathon 16/03/08. We plan to arrive Rome 14/03/08. With six days total, what would be the best use of our time - all in Rome or try a day trip to another city?

First of all, good luck with the race! I would imagine the course would hit most of the major points of interest. IMO. a long day or one overnight in Florence would be a must.

One easy day trip would be Ostia Antica. This was the port city for ancient Rome. When the harbor silted up, it was abandoned. Not quite as good as Pompeii, but pretty close (from the guidebook descriptions, never been to Pompeii). Plus Ostia Antica is easily reachable by metro, with one change of trains. And one ticket.

Check out Context Travel. They offer walking tours in Rome -- in fact we used them based on Rick's recommendation. They are a bit spendy, but you will only be in a small group (heck, on one tour it was just me, my husband and the guide) and they're truly amazing. They've branched out and they offer tours in Paris now and we've taken them there, also.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. We have planned to do a day trip (arriving early) to Pompeii. Would it be too much to also try to rent scooters and scoot up the Amalfi coast? We should try to catch a 10:00 train back to Rome that night. I'm having a blast just planning this trip!

I am also in Rome for the Marathon on the 16th - the run will cover Rome and all the sights - you will be able to do Pompeii on a day trip there a many organised trips leaving Rome by bus at 7 ish arriving back that 20.00 ish ( EUR 110)- I am meeting up with a school friend from Denmark and we will be going to Capri on a day trip as I have been to Pompeii many times - Tivoli is a great trip 1/2 day trip by train easy to find and the gardens are just out of this world - I am looking forward to the trip -we are fun runners and my friend has never been to Rome before nor done a Marathon so that in itself might turn into a day trip ha ha ha of course some 24k will be on cobblestones or sam petrini I am pleased to see 2oo retro runners have signed up - have you come across them before ?it would appear that the pros can do a marathon in less that 4 hours running backwards all the way - Janne
