Six days in Munich or 3 days munich 3 days Salzburg

Hello All,
My husband and I don't know what to do. We are flying back home from Munich on Sep 22,2011. We arrive to Venice from our cruise on Sep 16.2011, I'm checking the trains from Venice to Munich and I'm debating if we should stop in Salzburg, Austria for a few days OR expend the rest of our Honeymoon in Munich. Any suggestions???

I've been to Munich 7 times, 2+ weeks total. Everytime I go, I find something new to see. IMO, 6 days would not be too much. I also spent one day in Salzburg and saw everythink I wanted to see. Three days would be too much, unless you spent half the time in Berchtesgaden. I'd spend one or max two days in Salzburg, rest in Munich.

Wyna, I too have been in Munich several times and will be there the week of the 21st. There is so much to see in Munich plus it's a great hub for visiting other cities. You can still go to Salzburg for a day. I use the Bayern Ticket which allows travel for up to five people to cities in and around Bavaria. I've gone as far north as Nuremburg and even to Salzburg which is in Austria. Once again, I'd stay in Munich if I were you. You won't regret it. Have fun,
Bob

Well, I love both cities so much. That's why we did 3 in Munich and 3 in Salzburg when we went. I like to have a nice mix of city and mountains! Both are awesome cities. So whichever you decide, you will have a great time!

Hi Wyna, Personally, I'd go with the 3 and 3 idea. Salzburg is easily worth 2 nights/1 full day, but with the extra night/day, you could visit the Berchtesgaden area (1/2 hr. away). Things to see/do here could incluude: Konigssee lake trip, Jennerbahn cable car trip (next to Konigssee), Berchtesgaden itself (of course) and see the beautiful Alpine scenery. Plus, Salzburg is especially charming in the evening and at night. http://en.berchtesgadener-land.com/en/live/ennavi/parser,id,75,nodeid,.html http://www.jennerbahn.de/jennb/live/jennb_navi/liveindex.php?jennb_navi_id=33 Paul

Have to agree with the split, I love the mix of both these cities. Salzburg is charming and has some nice shopping as well. Its an easy city to wander and very beautiful. And of course the whole Sound of Music thing.

I'd do the split, too. It's worth a couple of days. And it'll be cheaper to stay in Salzburg, so I wouldn't do it as a day trip.

Six days is a lot for Munich IMO, especially when a world-class city like Salzburg is so close. I agree with other suggestions to split it up. You could also consider 2 days in Salzburg, a day/night in Prien, and then 3 days in Munich. Prien is on the way to Munich on a large, beautiful lake (Chiemsee). Boating, nature walks, biking, spas (resort area)...sounds like a nice break when on a honeymoon. There's also one of Ludwig's palaces on an island there... Herrenchiemsee.

I would definitely split as well. Frankly, I spent a brief amount of time in Munich (2 days, twice) and can't find anything to want to go back for. If someone can enlighten me about what they actually like about Munich, I'd love to hear it. :)

I read that Oktoberfest begins September 17 in Munich. That may have some bearing on your decision if you haven't already made lodging arrangements.
Good luck.
