Singapore to add fee for green aviation fuel

I saw it on slashdot but the orig article is below:

https://www.theedgesingapore.com/news/aviation-engineering/worlds-first-green-fuel-levy-add-almost-us32-air-fares

"World’s first green fuel levy to add almost US$32 to air fares"

[snip]
(Nov 10): Air passengers departing Singapore will pay a green fuel levy of as much as S$41.60 (US$31.95) from next year as the city-state locks in a key step in its effort to cut the aviation industry’s emissions.

Travellers flying in economy and premium economy, as well as those on short-haul routes, will be charged far less.

Those customers will pay an additional S$1 for trips to Southeast Asia, and S$10.40 for flights to the Americas, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said Monday. Business and first class travellers will pay four times more, it said.

...Passengers transiting through the city-state won’t need to pay the fee.

Excellent, make Businrss and First Class pay their fare share. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I'd rather see the Electric technology Airbus is developing. But (most) anything is better than the nothing of now.

Good for them! Rick Steves donates to address climate change too!

The better solution of course is a carbon tax.

A carbon tax is a tax levied on the carbon emissions from producing
goods and services. Carbon taxes are intended to make visible the
hidden social costs of carbon emissions. They are designed to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by essentially increasing the price of fossil
fuels. This both decreases demand for goods and services that produce
high emissions and incentivizes making them less carbon-intensive.[1]
When a fossil fuel such as coal, petroleum, or natural gas is burned,
most or all of its carbon is converted to CO2. Greenhouse gas
emissions cause climate change. This negative externality can be
reduced by taxing carbon content at any point in the product cycle.

Thanks for the link Andrea. In Europe the Scandinavian countries are strongest on climate change while Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia are among the weakest. It is a good reminder for me to travel to Scandinavia!

Also, Rick Steves commitment to sustainable travel makes them the best tour company too!

Happy travels.

In Singapore, all new buildings must replace the greenery lost on the ground due to development.

Well, in Germany this is law since 1976 (BNatSchG). Of course we have more area than Singapore, so the replacements are done not directly at the building.

About Scandinavia:

  • Norway is mostly on hydro power, one of the cleanest energies. But their CO2 footprint per capita is relatively high..
  • Denmark is strongly building wind energy parks. Like Northern Germany they will reach the point that at windy periods they are on 100% renewable power - the rest is a question of power storage and power trading. German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern needs to take off solar power from the grid at good windy periods because there are not enough energy transfer capacities to Southern Germany (building in progress).
  • Sweden and even more Finland are very addicted to nuclear power which is not really sustainable in a holistic view. Finland has more or less no real alternatives while Sweden tried hydro power since decades in Northern Sweden and for the little population up there it worked well afaik.
