Heaven on Earth! In 2004, I traveled to China on United mileage, business class. The agent could not get me onto United flights all the way through. "Would it be OK if I looked at flights on our partner airlines?" she asked. "Oh yes, please do!" said I. So I ended up flying my longest leg, from Seoul back to San Francisco, on Singapore Airlines, business class. The comfort and various services were so wonderful, I did not want to fall asleep and miss out, despite the 13 hours of flight. Dozens of current movies and classic movies, on my own personal screen. Meals were wonderful. Every couple of hours a beautiful flight attendant came by, in a different lovely outfit it seemed, and gently asked: "would you like a snack, sir, or maybe some pizza, or some wine?" Heaven on Earth, at least in 2004, and at least in business class, and especially when flying on mileage. And, Go Giants!

After a Singapore 747 landed in Atlanta, I saw all their flight attendants get off and leave. They made the other airlines' flight attendants look second class--almost like they were cloned. And they really strut their stuff.

If you're considering SingAir for a future trans-Pacific flight to Asia (or anywhere else come to think of it) then by all means go for it. They're one of the best airlines in the world - far ahead of any of the US carriers in terms of comfort, convenience, and service.

Flown them quite a few times, though lately mainly in economy. They are awesome even in economy. They give you a small amenity kit with socks, a toothbrush/toothpaste and an eyeshade. They will even get you wine from business class if you ask for something that is not being offered in economy. The hand out menus even in economy.

They will also give your playing cards and postcards if you ask.

If flying economy on their A380s, remember that some of these aircraft have a small economy section on the end of the upper deck which makes for a nice secluded cabin. Lufthansa also has this on some of their A380s.

Even though they mainly fly to Asia from the US, remember that they also have 2 flights that go via Europe: JFK to Frankfurt, and Houston-Manchester.

Edit - I have almost always flown on SQ using my United miles. Unfortunately, SQ availability does not show up on the United booking engine. You need to find availability some other way (ANA booking tool) or just call United to see what award seats may be available.

I feel sorry for you guys who have to make do with only what is offered by US carriers. I've been flying Singapore Airlines to Barcelona regularly (in economy) for 10 years now and they are indeed one of the best carriers out there. With increased competition from Mid East airlines such as Emirates, Etihad and Qatar, however, I don't think they are as good as they once were. I even had cause to complain about aspects of service on my last trip to India. With new A350 aircraft coming on stream for direct US flights they are looking to recapture some of the lost gloss.

If your destination is Singapore, be prepared. Not only is the airline world-class, so is the city-state, probably the most prosperous anywhere. It rates with the world's three biggest ocean ports, has the biggest casino in the world, is enriched by petro-chemical and medical industries, and attracts students to many branches of international universities. It has the highest rate of home ownership in the world. The government is somewhat democratic and the citizenry somewhat multi-cultural, both unusual in Asia. And to start an argument, its high-end restaurants and traditional street-hawker booths (now hygienically centralized) may make Singapore the greatest browse in international dining.
All this modern prosperity has a down-side: Damn expensive place to visit. I'd go back in an instant. Especially on Singapore Air.

Great airline all around, even in economy.

I live in Australia and fly to Europe & back every year. I don't even think about flying any other airline than Singapore. I can't afford business and don't have much credit card spending, but I do try to scrape together enough Frequent Flyer points and/or cash to upgrade myself to Premium Economy Plus, at least for the Singapore-Europe leg. As mentioned above, Economy upstairs on the A380 is a good deal if you are quick enough to catch one of those seats.
