showing credit card on train?

Hi, everyone. I'm going to be in Munich next month, and my girlfriend and I want to spend a day in Nuremberg. I went to buy our train tickets online, and learned that when we show our tickets, we'll have to show the credit card used to buy them. Third party tickets aren't allowed. Does this mean that we each have to buy our own tickets separately, with our own credit cards? Or can I buy both tickets, with my credit card, since we'll be traveling together?

Thanks!

You can buy both tickets together on one credit card. When your tickets are checked, simply show the credit card you used to purchase both tickets.

If you book your tickets NOW at www.bahn.de, you can get a Savings fare of €29 each way on ICE trains.

If you're willing to leave Munich after 09:00 on a weekday and take slower regional trains, you can buy a Bayern-Ticket which will allow you to travel to Nuernberg and back to Munich for a total of €28 for both of you together. Leave at 09:05 and arrive in Nuernberg at 10:47. If you travel on a Saturday or Sunday, you can leave as early in the morning as you wish. Buy the Bayern-Ticket from a ticket machine at the Munich Hbf. (It costs €30 if you buy it from an agent at a ticket window.)

If you want to get to Nuernberg earlier in the morning on a weekday, book outgoing ICE tickets and buy a Bayern-Ticket for your return to Munich.

As Tim says, use a Bayern-Ticket. It will take a little longer (~45 min more) to get to Nuernberg, but it will only cost you €28 for both, round trip, vs at least €116 using online Dauer-Spezial tickets. Plus, you won't have any train commitment.

@Tim - I don't see the savings fare for the ICE train online. How do I book the discounted fare?

Thanks!

You need to book your ticket on the German Rail site, www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down flag menu for English. Enter the German spellings for your departure and arrival points, Muenchen and Nuernberg. Enter your travel date, preferred departure time, and number of people traveling. Click on "Search." On the new page you'll see a Savings fare column on the right-hand side. Either click on "Check availability" for your preferred departure time or click on "Check all." Proceed with booking the departure time of your choice and print your ticket.

If you use Bahn.de, it will eventually take you to the German Rail Query Page, here. Might as well start there.

Be sure to put in your planned date, not today's date. The Dauer-Spezial fares only show up for dates three days in advance.

When you click "Check availability", if the lowest fare is no longer available on that connection, it will show you "Single ride no longer available". If you click "Change connection", it will return you to the connections page and the lowest fare still available for each connection will be shown.
