Does anyone know if there are sleeping compartments available on the night train from Berlin to Vienna that have a private shower? Thanks!
With that long of a trip, you are better off flying. Check AirBerlin or even Lufthansa for prices to see how they compare.
First question should be, 'Is there a night train from Berlin to Vienna?' No. Using the German Rail (Bahn) website, I found a night train (EN) from Hannover to Vienna, and one (CNL) from Berlin to Munich. The rest of the trip is by day train. Both connections take over 13 hours. As for having a private shower, choose a "deluxe" compartment (single or double). I'm not certain about Euronight trains (EN) but on CNL, deluxe compartments have a WC and shower in the compartment.
I did check the DeutscheBahn website and there is a direct night train from Berlin to Vienna. However, I am unable to tell if it offers deluxe sleeping compartments.
Hmmm, when I check the website, looking for overnight trains departing from Berlin, there is nothing for Berlin - Vienna, or anywhere in Austria for that matter. The closest you'll get is Munich...
Maybe I'm reading the DeutscheBahn website wrong? I see a train that leaves Berlin at 18:13 and arrives in Vienna at 06:30. It says that the duration is 12:17 and has 0 changes. I took that to mean that it is a direct night train, but perhaps I am mistaken.
Chris is right, there is a direct EN leaving Berlin at 18:13 to Vienna Meidling at 6:07. However, it doesn't look like it is bookable online from either RailEurope or the Bahn. I guess you could reserve it by phone with the Bahn. Austrian Rail does allow booking online for this train and does show 1, 2, and 3 person compartments. But they don't allow you to specify econo/deluxe or a class for the compartment, so I would expect it only has 2nd class (econo compartments, without private shower or WC). Note also that the train leaves Berlin before 7 PM, so if you are using a rail pass, you would have to use two days or book a separate ticket from Berlin to Dresden.
Chris, Try going to this page( not sure how to set up the links properly).. http://www.bahn.com/citynightline/view/en/index.shtml
and then move your cursor to Berlin on the map to the left. Click on Berlin and it will show you the overnight routes that depart from that city...
No, you're not mistaken, the departure at 1813 is a direction connection. But that departure is considered a day ride. Technically, a night train starts after 1900. After 1900 no direct connection exists between Berlin and Wien. I would suggest taking the CNL to Munich and transfer there to the RJ for Wien. I've done that route except my CNL originated in Hamburg, ended in Munich, transfered to th RJ....a very nice ride.
Thank you everyone! This has been a big help. I didn't realize it would use-up 2 RailPass days for the direct train. The transfer in Munich sounds like an option. Or maybe I will just fly.
A ticket for the IC from Berlin to Dresden would cost €38 standard 2 cl. With advance purchase online from the Bahn, you could get it for €19. Since the €38 ticket (but not the €19 ticket) is an open ticket, and the night train and IC are similar "products", you might be able to use the IC ticket to cover Berlin to Dresden (you leave Dresden after 7 PM so a rail pass would work). However, you would still have to find a place to book your accommodations (and I suspect that that train does not have ensuite showers). I think you are still better off Berlin to Munich with the IC and Munich to Vienna with the RJ.
Will do - thank you!
