Should we buy a Eurail Pass

Hello! We will be traveling through Denmark, Germany and Italy for 3 weeks (late July - mid Aug). Should we buy a Eurail Pass? We will likely ride the train about 8 times; within Denmark twice, then Aarhus to Munich and Rothenburg ob der Tauber, then Munich to Florence, and Florence to Rome - with a few day trips mixed in. Advice?

In a nutshell. You will not know unless you do the math. of pass cost plus supplements plus time expended on inconvenience against purchase of point to point tickets purchased in advance with discounting or not. 'Should we buy a Eurail Pass' - google this subject and you will have all the guidance you need.

Michelle, As the previous reply indicated, you'll need to do some "number crunching" to determine whether P-P tickets or a Railpass will be more cost effective. You might find it helpful to download Rick's PDF Rail Guide from this website. Click the "Railpasses" tab at the top, and then look in the lower right corner for the link. There's a small Map in the Guide which provides approximate time and costs on various routes. You could also try the RailSaver website, as that should provide an approximate idea. Keep in mind that Railpasses DO NOT include the reservation fees that are compulsory on the premium trains. You'll need to pay separately for those. Especially in Italy, DO NOT be caught without reservations or you may face hefty fines which will be collected on the spot and they're not cheap! Railpasses are not usually good value in Italy. It's possible to book tickets at discounted prices on the Trenitalia website. According to reports I've seen, the website seems to be erratic at times, so not the most user friendly. Booking tickets for premium trains in Italy will "lock" you into a particular train and departure time. If you miss that train, you'll likely have to buy new tickets at full price. You may also find it helpful to make a call to Rick's Railpass experts. Look in the "Contact Us" information at the bottom of this page. If you decide to order Passes, they can advise on the best one, and send them out to you straight away. Happy travels!

@Nigel, Very good point! I'd forgotten about that (it's been a while since I last used a Railpass).

You don't mention Austria. Bear in mind if your trip includes Munich to Florence that you will be going through Austria and will need that country on your pass unless you pay cash for the Austria segment.

Thanks for the input everyone... so far it seems a few point to point train tickets will do for the shorter jaunts like Cop to Arhus - then fly the long segments like Copenhagen to Munich. If anyone has advice on airlines, I'd love to hear it.
Cheers!
