I am planning a 3-4 month trip to Europe for my 50th birthday next year. Has any one had experience with short term car leasing? Because I want to see as much countryside, as city, I think I need a car, and because I will be traveling alone a car makes me feel more in control. I can lease a brand new car from renault for the 96 days I think I plan to stay for $2600 and any extra days are $13. This includes all taxes, insurance, and fees. Does this sound like a good idea? I think I will like a car better because I plan to spend much of my time in the countryside. I want to see the real Europe and it's people. Any feedback?
We've leased with both Peugeot and Renault and prefer Renault and Renault cars. I try to stay with 5-speed, as the 6-speed stick shifts confuse me a little. The deal you've been quoted is very good. We had to use the insurance for a windshield replacement and were very satisfied with the quick, 100% covered service. Both brands use the same insurance company.
One thing to note: the car is yours, in your name. If there is a repair or service to be made, you won't have use of the car during those hours/days, just like with any car you own.
Actually, if your leased car is going to be in the shop for 12 hours to 10 days, Renault will provide you with a rental car to use during that interim for which they will pay up to 750 euros, or they will pay 65 euros per person per night toward local hotel accomodations (your choice). If your leased vehicle is going to be out of commission more than 10 days, they'll bring you another. It's all spelled out here: http://tinyurl.com/9tmodzz
For a trip like yours, leasing is a great idea. I've leased from Renault 4 times and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. One of the great features of the Renault program - especially for someone traveling alone - is their 24/7 roadside assistance in case you have a breakdown. And their insurance is full, no deductible coverage. I think you'll have a great time. I hope you're planning to stay at a lot of B&B's. We've found that that's the best way to meet local people and fellow travelers. In B&B's we've also gotten great tips on things to see and do, places to eat, etc.
I am planning on staying at some B&B's, but also at Nunnarys, Monastaries, and convents, found through GoodNightGodBless.com
I don't think I can be safer than in a convent, do you?
Sounds like a good idea. Have twice leased a Peugeot through Auto France. Very pleased. Similar to Renault program that Tom describes in his post.
Re your proposed 96 day stay: you might want to check out the Schengen zone maximum stay allowance of 90 days out of any 180 days. Suggest you research this at the source and not rely on hearsay.
I have, and I am applying for a visa rather than just taking my passport. Thanks for the tip, It would be horrible to get there, and then be made leave.
We have done leases through both Renault and Peugeot and been very satisfied with both although Peugeot's new web site seems to be far less user friendly than their old one. As far as we are concerned leasing is the only way to go. In three months time you are bound to go somewhere that requires an International Drivering Permit, don't go without one.
We leased a car in France through Peugeot a number of years ago, and heartily recommend it for such a long stay.
@ Tom, Thank you for correcting me. That is so good to know. Have to get my bifocals checked and will read more carefully next time.
