Short Layover in AMS

My husband and I are in the process of planning an Eastern Europe trip for May 2023. Currently we are planning to fly from Seattle to Budapest and then home to Seattle from Krakow. We found tickets on Delta that have one stop both ways at AMS. On the outbound trip the layover is just over 2 hours at AMS and on the way home just 1.5 hours. We flew through AMS in April this year and we had no issue or slow downs. I would think 2 hours should be adequate on the way to Budapest but what does everyone think about 1.5 hours on the way home from Krakow? We only do carry on luggage. There is a second flight to Seattle that day that would mean a 5.5 hour layover in AMS. I would hate to add another 4 hours in AMS if 1.5 hours is adequate to catch our plane. I would appreciate input from those of you who have had short connections at AMS.

Thanks for your help. I love this forum and all the great travel help.

I wouldn't be crazy about it, but if the price were right I would do it. I had a simikar layover at AMS earlier this year, and it worked, but that really means nothing. Not too crazy about Delta either, but again ....

If there is a second flight to Seattle from AMS the same day, you would almost surely get put on that anyway if you miss the first one. Unless you really have to be home the next day guaranteed, I really wouldn't worry about this: book the 1.5 hour connection home. You'll probably make it and if not, almost probably get on the next one. It doesn't seem worth guaranteeing the 5.5 hour layover.

It's been a few years, but we actually made a 40 minute connection in AMS with no problem. On the other hand, we didn't have that short a layover when we first booked the flight--it was Delta changing the flight times--and those 40 minutes were very nerve-wracking. When I asked about it on this forum all those years ago, people assured me that AMS was pretty good with short connections.

We flew through AMS a year ago and our long outgoing flight was on Delta's partner, KLM. Worse food ever and the drink service was even bad. The flight attendants spent the flight in the kitchen minimizing contact with the passengers.

The return flight out of AMS was on a Delta flight, and the service was impeccable in every way.

Your long distance flights to and from SEATAC are Delta flights. Go for it.

Keep in mind that you will go through immigration both coming and going in AMS.

The only thing that would give me pause on the way home is if you absolutely had to be home as scheduled. A 90 minute layover in AMS should be fine, although a flight delay to AMS or more AMS airport staffing issues could occur and mess things up for your second leg to Seattle. Having a another flight to Seattle on the schedule is reassuring. I would book it but be prepared that you may miss your flight and be stuck in Amsterdam for a few hours. It is a great airport to be stuck in. Also, if you have status with Delta, the new KLM lounge at AMS is great.

I would just note this requires your flight from Krakow to be on time - there's no room for error with a 1.5 hour layover, especially if you check bags on way home. Also, you can't assume there will be room for you on the second flight to Seattle - it could be fully booked. None of us can say whether AMS will be easy going next May (it sure wasn't this past summer). If you don't absolutely have to be home by a specific date, then go for it. Worst case you'll need to book a hotel overnight to catch a flight the next day. If you're tied to a specific return, then book the longer layover and enjoy the airport (the airport park, Rijksmuseum, etc.)
