Short duratin night trains - how does that work???

Several times in RS books they recommend night trains for what appears to be short durations - example: Rome to Venice, Paris to Swiss Alps, & Venice to Munich. Train times between these cities are all 5 hours or less. So, how does that work - do you just get a short nights sleep or do they let you stay on the train until morning?

The direct Rome-Venice night train is 6hr34min.

The direct Venice-Munich night train is 7hr39min.

See the timetables at www.bahn.de.

Interesting! www.raileurope.com shows:
Rome to Venice direct trains - 4hr 27min
Paris to Interlaken - 3hr 27min to Basel and 1hr 50 to Interlaken
Thanks for the link!

Elizabeth, Tim is the best transportation person on the RS site. He is quoting the correct night train times. However, daytime runs from Venice to Rome are 4.5hrs - 5.5hrs depending on the run. Paris to Interlaken is 5.5hrs-6.5hrs depending on which station in Paris you depart and on which run you choose.

Larry is being much too kind!

The night train portion of Paris-Interlaken is Paris-Karlsruhe and it would make for a short night (22:45-04:55). Again see the timetables at www.bahn.de.

The bahn.de timetables are the best ones for virtually all of Europe and the RailEurope timetables are the worst. They are grossly incomplete and the fares are inflated compared to what you can get by booking on national rail sites.
