Short connection at Munich airport

I am flying Madrid-San Francisco via Munich. I arrive in Munich at 15:00 and the next flight leaves Munich at 16:10. I am flying with Lufthansa (Madrid flight Operated by Lufthansa CityLine Flight 4421) and the MUC-SFO flight is 458, lufthansa.

I want to know if anybody has done something like that and if 1h10min is enough for the connection at Munich. I am not checking in any luggage. I have checked the gates online and it says the MAD-MUC flight arrives at gate TS2 and the next one departs from gate H02. If anybody knows Munich aiport, is that far away?

Thanks,
Mar.

Thanks both Lee and Andreas for your prompt reply. I am flying with Lufthansa miles, so the 2 choices I was offered was a 1h connection in Frankfurt or the 1h 10min in Munich, so that's the one I took... I just wanted to know if I had to walk a lot from gate to gate. And yes, I was aware of the passport control departing the EU... I can only keep my fingers cross and appeal to "the kind German hearts" to let me go to the front of the line ;)

1.10h in MUC is definitely more realistic than 1h at FRA airport!! Good choice then. In MUC it's all within one terminal. The non-Schengen zone is on the floor above the Schengen zone gates. I find the terminal to be very well sign-posted.

That is not "TS2", it's T2S!

That could be Terminal 2, Süd (south), which would be one of the gates on the other end of T2. What's more, it looks like arrivals and departures are on different levels. But I agree with Andreas, your biggest time delay will probably be TSA security near the gate. And, what if the flight is late? Since it is all Lufthansa, they will probably make sure you get back to the States that day (assuming there are more flight to the US that day), but where? And how long will it take from there to San Francisco? If you could talk them into an earlier flight out of Madrid, it might help.

I made an hour connection at FRA once, from Concourse A to Concourse B, but it was tight.

According to the LH website there are more connections from MAD via either FRA or MUC to SFO. There are two daily flights between MUC and SFO, one operated by LH, one by UA. I'm using my LH miles to get to LAX in October and I could even book an LH flight operated by Swiss (much better service) via ZRH... Are you sure you can't get a less stressful connection?

Munich airport information is at www.munich-airport.de/en. The arrival and departure information shows both your flights using Terminal 2.

The layout of both terminals can be found here (PDF file, requires Adobe Acrobat). I can see gate H02 at the north end of Level 5 of Terminal 2, but gate TS2 doesn't make any sense. Perhaps it is something else, like a "bus in"?

I know MUC airport very well. Lufthansa operate their own terminal there and walks aren't too long within that terminal. BUT: What if your MAD-MUC flight is delayed? There is a 2nd security screening for your US bound flight. Lines can be pretty long there as you probably know. I wouldn't book a flight with such a short connection time these days to be honest. There is a lot to see and do at Munich's airport including their own very good micro brewery/Bavarian restaurant (Airbräu, just outside T2 in the Audi Forum). I'd rather spend some time at the airport than miss my connection...

with the dates I input (I need to fly back to SFO on May 11) miles and more only offered me those 2 flight I mentioned before. One leaves Madrid at 6.40 and gives me only 1 hour at frankfurt and the other one, the one I took, leaves Madrid at 12.30 and gives me the hour and 10 minutes via Munich... As you can see, I am very limited. I am going to call miles and more and see if they can give me any suggestions, but when I call the 1-800 number for lufthansa, they told me that should be plenty of time (of course I knew they were going to tell me that...)

Well, if it is any solace, in October a year ago, I flew out of MUC on USAir to Philly. I took the S-Bahn from a Munich suburb to the airport and arrived with 2+ hours. First I had to find a PO and mail my room key back to the hotel (sigh), then make my way to checkin and through security 2 times. I finally got to the gate and had a big wait until flight time.

As I said, as long as your flight from Madrid to MUC is on time, I think you have enough time. Maybe you can get the FA to have one of those golf cart take you to TSA security (nothing you can do about them).

But, plan for the best. Maybe you'll miss the flight and Lufthansa will put you up in a hotel in Munich. Munich's a fun place. If they don't pay for your overnight stay, Hotel Gerd, in nearby Freising, is supposed to be reasonable, and nice. The S-Bahn from Freising goes directly into Munich.

And, next time, cut out the "middleman". Forget Madrid; just stay in Munich.
