We're considering shipping a US diesel Jeep with California registration to Greece. We've found a shipper, think we've found basic insurance with green card (we'll be in Turkey as well), and know we can only use it in Greece for 180 days before locking it up in customs or taking it out of (question #1) Greece? or the EU?
(question #B) Does anyone know of any particular problems having to do with bringing US spec diesels into the EU?
(question #III) Does anyone know what ELSE we're overlooking???
Why do you want to do this? And how long do you intend to stay?
Unless there's a specific reason you need that particular vehicle, I think it would be far more practical and much cheaper to get a car in the EU.
Shipping will NOT be cheap and it could take several months to arrive, with the risk that it doesn't (containers go overboard quite regularly). Plus you've got to get it registered and have proper insurance - either for Greece or the EU.
Also, remember that gas is considerably more expensive here, so a gas-guzzling US car isn't going to be cheap to run.

There are special companys that organize these kind of things and know all the details. (cant remember the name of one I knew of that shipped old classic cars for car-club-trips to europe using model Ts or something). Id call the embassy of the country you want to go to (local Greek consulate) and they could also help direct you to the right folks. Also - you may find it easier landing in another country first if its less restrictive. Not an easy question for "taveling lite!" websites = but google a bit more if you dont get the answers.
Thanks to all. Problems solved.
