Does shaving cream (the type that comes in tubs/soft creamy) and stick deodorant (clearish/pushes up from container like chapstick) count towards the amount of liquids allowed to be carried on? Do they need to be in the quart baggie allotment? Asking for International travel by the way... Thank you!
Dunno the answers to your question but I can assure that both products are widely available throughout Europe.
The is no difference in limitation between domestic and international as to carry on allowances. The level of inspection may be different
Shaving cream in the bag. Stick deodorantif it's solid, then technically it doesn't have to be in the bag. If it's gel or roll on then it does have to be in the bag. As stated, rules are the same if you're flying within California or halfway around the world. It's the same security. And remember, no individual item can be more than 3.2oz/100ml
To add to what Frank said, each container must not be larger than 3.4oz/100ml. You can't take a larger, nearly empty container. But you can take several containers of the same thing as long as they all fit in the bag with the top closed.
Thanks for all the useful info. Just so I get it clearly: shaving cream that is like a soft soap used for brushes is considered a liquid and has to fit into the regs? Same goes for deodorant that is solid, but gel-like and slides on?
This is the way the rule was explained to me: If you can pour it out (liquid), squeeze it out (gel/paste), or spray it out (aerosol), it is bound by the 3-1-1 carry-on rule.
Interesting...Makes sense. But, not to put too fine a point on it, the deodorant stick doesn't qualify? Why doesn't the TSA or another travel resource put a chart together with photos of the items so it is crystal clear? Thanks again. Christian.
A solid stick deodorant is not a liquid, nor is it a gel/paste, nor is it an aerosol. The deodorant I use is called a "soft solid", and comes in the same type of container as a solid stick, but it is a cream consistency - it goes in the bag. You can always put questionable items in the baggie anyway, so if it doubt, put it in.
My husband always puts anything that is even VAGUELY possibly a gel or creme into the baggie. And brings the 3 oz. size. We have gotten through international customs (and domestic TSA checkpoints) with a WIDELY varying list of things.... I got through security recently in Seattle (domestic flight) with a Barlow knife in my purse!!!! Yes, I had forgotten it was there, but - jeepers! On one post 9/11 trip to Europe I got the stank eye for a small tube of suncreeen. Another time, I was "outed" for a tube of chapstick. To be on the safe side, err on the side of caution. And of course, anything you need - shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream - can be purchased in Europe. So - if in doubt and you don't want to pack it, no worries! You can pick it up when you get where you are going.
...and if I am checking a bag I don't worry about it. If it is too big, or questionable, or I don't want to carry it in my carry-on, I just put it in a zip lock bag (to protect my luggage!) and throw it in my bag.
What was for me once a small shave kit is now two quart-size bags. One quart size bag is liquid (e.g. toothpaste), shaving cream goes there and needs to be smaller than 3 oz. The other quart size bag is dry (e.g. toothbrush), solid deoderant goes there and doesn't need to be under 3 oz. (but why would you need more?).
We are traveling for three months and want to have enough of my favorite shaving cream and deodorant to last. Other items, of course, can be picked up along the way. Otherwise 3oz would be enough. Hoping that shaving cream and deodorant do not count against quart bag... my hope at least.
Christian Based on my experiences with TSA, Gel or liquid will and do count against the 3 oz limit. You dont have to convince us- you do have to convince the TSA agent. If you are going for three months, why not pack it in checked luggage. no more problem
Christian, there's a good chance your shave cream and deodorant are available in Europe. Heck, my shave cream is made in Italy.
Shaving cream will have to go in the baggie. But no one says you can't take more than one container of it, as long as it all fits into the baggie with the top closed.
I believe Christian is talking about shaving "soap", the kind that comes in a mug or tub and is used with a wet brush. My husband shaves with this, the shaving stuff, whatever you call it, is the texture of bar soap, not a gel, cream, or liquid. He does not put it in his 3-1-1 bag.
Sasha is right. It is the type of shaving soap used with a brush brush. Normally comes in a tub, but the travel version is in a tube - knowing that, can I keep it outside the baggie? No question could be found in Europe. Made in London. But, just trying to see what the rules are. If we were checking bags, I would no doubt put it there. But, only carry-on. Thank you for all the great perspective.
Since you described it initially as soft/creamy, and say the travel version comes in a tube (you squeeze it out?), I would say it needs to go in the baggie. But as I said, you could take more than one tube.
To make this thread complete, here is a recent series of posts on the same subject: Deodorant in carry-on
but the travel version is in a tube In the 6th answer, Mary said, "If you can pour it out (liquid), squeeze it out (gel/paste), or spray it out (aerosol), it is bound by the 3-1-1 carry-on rule. If its in a tube, can't you squeeze it out?
Maybe you should ship some ahead, just to be sure.
