Seville to Barcelona by train or plane

Hello - just starting to research how we're going to get from Seville to Barcelona for our trip this Fall. I guess the obvious way would be to fly. I'm finding that Ryanair and Vueling look like our only options.

We enjoy taking the train, but it's 5 1/2 hours and costs as much as a plane ticket.

Just wondering if I'm looking at all my options. Have any of you taken the train rather than flying for this trip?

Thanks so much.

I don't think you're missing anything. But let's say in round numbers that the flight + 1-hour check-in + airport transfers adds up to 4 hours.

I cannot promise much stunning scenery on this train ride, but a 5.5 hour direct train is also no issue for me. The 8:50 direct departure technically arrives in time for Spanish lunch time (at 14:30).

Prices on either train or plan tend to be cheapest with early booking. Flights would already be available and train tickets tend to go on sale about 2 months ahead for the best rates.

Given the option of a 1 hour flight or a 5.5 hour train, I always opt for the train. It's city center to city center, no airport security hassles and I'm way more comfortable.

I was considering something similar...

But the time savings of a flight are quickly eaten up when the planes delayed. I did this several years ago between two cities. Plane looked a lot faster, but.. out to airport in time to clear security, 45 minute delay, getting from the airport to the city.... it actually wound up taking longer. Now I tend to go with the train option :)

I'd do the train anytime. Very comfortable seats, your luggage is with you (check restrictions on those airlines you are looking at), security much easier (your bags will be screened at the train station). Fly to save a few hours and put up with all that airport nonsense? Don't!

Make sure you are checking the RENFE website for the discounted train tickets. You do have to lock into that ticket as most of those fares are non-refundable (and many are non-changeable). But if you know you can commit to a specific schedule, you can get good deals. Book as soon as you can as those fares are limited.

Flying will only save you, door to door, about 1-2 hours. If you are packing light, it can be easier and quicker (no checked bags). If you have more luggage, it might be easier to take the train.

Remember that most discount airlines have VERY strict luggage policies. Most people pay more than the actual ticket price once the extra charges are added in.

The train scenery will be a lot like traveling through parts of the Southwest (without the dramatic colorful rock formations).

If the price is about the same, and the total travel time is even an hour or so more, I'd choose the train. I'd rather relax in a comfortable seat, be able to get up and walk around, have a picnic meal (with food and drink purchased in advance). I hate flying because of all the hassles - getting to the airport, checking luggage, going through security, uncomfortable airport, more uncomfortable plane . . . The chances of a flight scheduling change or delay are much higher than a train change. Your luggage is with you on the train.
