Help trying to find my way through Rail Europe and Renfe for train tickets connection these cities. Will be staying 3 days in each. Flying into Sevilla from Lisbon and flying home from Madrid. What is the easiest travel between each city. Just found plane tickets from Granada to Madrid for $38 each. Is this a better way to go? Don't really want to spend hours on bus/train. We are on a 2 week vacation, yes I know I will see more of the country side on a bus, but I really want to walk around the towns of Spain. Help what is the best/easiest way to connect to these towns?
The train from Granada to Madrid takes 4.5 hours and is very smooth and comfortable, and you end up right in th e heart of Madrid. I doubt the plane would be much faster, by the time you add travel time to the airport, security time, flight, and travel from Barajas airposrt back in to Madrid. You also have to add the cost of transport to and from each airport to that $38. Thee are two trains a day. If you buy well in advance on Renfe you should be able to get the Web fare of 26,85.
I couldn't get to the spot to purchase tickets on Renfe. Am I missing something or is it hard to connect to the actual purchase it wants me to call.
'What is the easiest travel between each city.' -
Seville to Granada either train or bus - your choice - you have RENFE and bus is www.alsa.es - but in Granada the bus station is on the edge of the city adding a little to your journey if staying central. 'Just found plane tickets from Granada to Madrid for $38 each.' - good for you, see the post by Lola. Possibly with your second post you may not have something like - http://tiny.cc/41mogw or as you are from the U.S. this hugely comprehensive - http://tiny.cc/5ynb6 Does this cover it?
to purchase tickets on Renfe, start with the "purchase" link (the shopping cart). do not try to geet there from the "fares and schedules" area. See the links thoughtfully provided by Neil for detailed instructions on dealing with Renfe. The main thing is to register your credit card with Verified by Visa before you start, and also call your bank to advise you will be making a purchase from Spain so they don't reject it. It you can't get Renfe to work try Petrabax. Price is sllightly higher but it is easier to use.
I'd probably train Seville to Granada, but plane Granada to Madrid. You can catch the metro into town from the Madrid airport so it's not particularly expensive or inconvenient. I'm not sure the options for getting to Granada airport. Taxis aren't outrageous in Granada, so that's at least one option.
I'd probably take the bus from Seville to Granada.
We did the bus from Sevilla to Granada (then cab to hotel). The cost was quite a bit less for the ride and didn't take much longer at all. The bus was almost empty and the views of the countryside were great - when we weren't sleeping.
There are frequent buses from Granada to Seville. The express is 4.5h , E36 and the standard is 5h, E17. When considering the plane don't forget to also add any checked bag fees. www.movelia.org
Thank you for the help with transportation. On the bus is luggage under the bus, or with you in a overhead bin? The train 1st class vs 2 class what is the difference? Where is your luggage on the train? With you or checked? As you can see I've never taken a train or bus in Europe, just planes. We are looking for the easiest way to connect to each of these cities in Spain.
If the bus from Sevilla to Granada takes 4.5 to 5 hours, that is yet another reason to take the train. It takes 3 hours and 8-10 minutes. Cost is 27,85 euro. That train only has turista (2d) class. There are 4 trains a day in summer. Best to purchase tickets in advance. You do not check bags on the trains; you carry it on with you. You can place it either on the overhead rack above your seat, or on the rack at the end of the car. The AVE train from Madrid to Sevilla does have a choice of classes. We mostly rode 2d class on the AVE trains, but did ride 1st class from Barcelona to Madrid because the discount tickets for 2d were all sold and 1st was actually cheaper! We did not notice any significant difference in comfort. First class does include a meal on some trains (ours did and it was pretty mediocre) and also gives you access to the lounge in the waiting area. I'd stick with 2d class.
