SENDING STUFF HOME

I HAVE BEEN TRAVELING FROM OUT OF COUNTRY, AND STATE TO STATE, AND HAVE BEEN GETTING CHARGED EXTRA, FOR MY EXTRA LUGGAGE. I'M READY TO DOWNSIZE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEND MY EXTRA LUGGAGE HOME. I WAS WONDERING WHAT WOULD BE THE LEAST EXPENSIVE WAY? POST OFFICE, TRAIN, OR BUS? PLEASE HELP.

I think that would largely depend on how much luggage, from where and to where it is going, and when you need it in your final destination.

You didn't say from where. We will assume you mean from Europe.

I have read on this page other travelers experiences in shipping goods home from Europe. Most of them say the costs are ?unbelievable. Do your research AFTER you get there. Use the telephone to ask for shipping rates.

Probably bus....their shipping rates seem to be the lowest. If your stuff isn't essential or expensive, you may want to consider downsizing to the nearest charity story for both clothes and old luggage.

Sometimes when you are travelling , your possessions seem so much more important than they really are. Make sure you LOVE the stuff before you decide to ship it home.

Sending it home will probably cost more than the $25-$75 the airline might charge. For example, I sent my neice and nephew a couple small bears and some candy from England. The box was small, weight not quite 1 1/2 kilos (little over 3 lbs) and that cost me 12 pounds (about $25 at the time)

Katarina, where is home? How much luggage are you talking about sending?

In some European countries - France is one - the post office sells a package of a sturdy cardboard box plus the postage to North America. You can put as much as will fit in the box, regardless of weight. We have used this a couple of times to get rid of smaller, but heavier items we either purchased or no longer needed and found it quite effective. The cost may not be much of a saving over excess baggage, but it sure beats luggng it on and off trains!

It's probably cheaper (and more convenient) to pay the extra weight to the airline.

Check the post office or shipping companies to compare.

One other option (if you have a military connection) is to use the APOs on military bases. They charge (or did the last time I used one) the same price for parcel as you would pay if you shipped within the US.

Katarina, perhaps they are charging you extra because you WON'T STOP SHOUTING.
