I am preparing to purchase tickets with the required seat reservations on Trenitalia. Even though they provide a small representation of the seating, I can't tell which is the front and the back of the car. I want to be sure to get forward facing seats. At first I thought the lower numbers were near the front of the car thus indicating direction, but this didn't seem to be true in all cases. Your advice would be appreciated. thanks!
The cars in a train might be connected going either direction. There is no way you can guarantee a front facing seat.
It is not possible to guarantee a forward-facing seat. Most Trenitalia seats are organized as facing a symmetric row, so low or high numbers are no guarantee. The rail cars are bi-direction for high-speed trains, they can be driven both ways and, for instance, all trains calling at Firenze SMN station or Napoli Centrale do invert direction during the trip.
That makes perfect sense now that you explain it. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
We have travelled extensively by train through various Euopean countries and have found in most cases, the two seats we book are not side by side, but across from each other. This suits us just fine, as I don't like 'going the wrong way'. My husband doesn't mind. As someone has pointed out in another thread re this matter, often you will come into a station one way and continue your journey in the opposite direction. Easy to swap seats!
