I normally prefer point to point train tickets rather than a pass. However, I'm planning a trip where we want a car for a few days at a couple of places. It looks like getting a minimum "rail and drive" pass would be the best bet just to get the cheap daily car rental rates that go along with it. Anybody got any comments on this idea?
thanks,
Jim
I've compared the rail and drive pass against purchasing a railpass and car rental separately, and have found the railpass and separate car rental option less expensive. But that may be unique to my comparison. We are traveling to France and Italy in September 2008 and need a combination of rail and driving days in each country. I've found the best prices for car rentals at www.autoeurope.com.
I have not looked lately, but in the past found similar rates available for short-term rentals through consolidators like Auto Europe if reserved in advance. So I think you should check your assumption.
A rail-and-drive pass can be a good deal (a) if you get a second-class country pass and (b) if your use justifies it.
