My family of three are thinking of taking a sleeper car from Rome to Munich. I thought I read somewhere that a family could stay together, but on the Bahn site it looks like my husband would have to sleep in a different area of the train in his own sleeper car away from my daughter and me...is this correct?
I believe couchettes are "segregated", since they are 4 and 6 person, and you wouldn't fill it. However, if you fully occuppied a 2 person sleeper, it doesn't matter about gender. There used to be some three person sleeper compartments on that train, but I don't know if there are anymore. If yes, you could book a whole compartment, if not, and you need 1-1/2 compartments, then they may be separate.
There is a 3-bed compartment configuration shown on the Rome to Munich night train fare page. It's going to cost more than 3 seats in a 4-couchette compartment but...
Also, you might want to invest a few dollars in calling the Trenitalia call center. From the U.S., it's 011-39-06-6847-5475 and discuss this with them.
Thank you so much!
Couchettes are either mixed or female only. You have your choice. If you choose mixed, then husband, wife, and daughter will share the same couchette with each other--and possibly with another person, either male or female.
If you don't want to share the compartment with a stranger, then book a three-bed sleeper.
