Security When Changing Planes in Europe

On my way back from Italy this fall, I will be flying out of Naples with a layover in Frankfurt. I know what to expect as far as customs/immigration/security when flying from Europe back to the US, but I've never had a flight from one European country to another. Will I have to collect my checked luggage and go through immigration/security when I change planes in Frankfurt? Or will my checked bags go on through and I'll just need to go through security? Any help would be appreciated...I'd just like to know what to expect since I don't have a very long layover (just over an hour).

I am assuming you are traveling Naples - Frankfurt - US. Your bags should be checked through to your first US destination where you will then collect them and go through customs & immigration.

If all your flights are part of the same ticket, then your luggage will automatically be transferred to you connecting flight to the US. You will have to go through immigration in Frankfurt. You will probably have to go through security at Frankfurt as well. But last year I flew from Amsterdam to Frankfurt to Newark, and only went through security at AMS, nothing at Frankfurt. It may have been a fluke, on another connection through FRA a few years earlier I went through three security screenings, so be prepared for anything.

Ashley, Regarding your luggage, if you're using a Code Share flight (ie: the same ticket as mentioned in the previous reply), your checked luggage will be forwarded through to your first stop in the U.S. (where you'll probably have to collect it before proceeding through U.S. checkpoints). However, if you're using a European budget carrier to get from Naples to Frankfurt, the situation will be different. Regarding "customs/immigration", you WILL have to pass through Passport control at Frankfurt airport, where your Passport will be stamped as that's your point of exit from the E.U. I've also faced a short layover of an hour when transiting through Frankfurt, and it is possible. It will be important to get off the NAP/FRA flight as quickly as possible, and get through security and Passport control. If there are a lot of flights being processed at that time, there could be a bit of a queue. DON'T stop for coffee!!! Happy travels!

Thanks for your help, everyone. At least having a rough idea of what to expect should make things go smoothly.
