Traveling to Germany via Heathrow next month--arriving Term 3, departing Term 1. I have heard that the transfer time has gotten long, especially the security check as you head to the transfer point. Any recent reports? Also, we have a 9 hour layover, so I was thinking about leaving Terminal 3, catching Heathrow Express to downtown, the returning to Terminal 1, missing the big backup altogether. Anyone else do this?
If your bags aren't checked through, use the left luggage facilities at Heathrow.
Don't waste your money on the Heathrow Express. By the time you take the tube from Paddington station to the central tourist areas near the Thames, you'll only have saved about ten minutes over taking the tube all the way. Buy a one-day, zone 1-6 travelcard (off-peak, after 09:30 on weekdays and anytime on weekends)for £6.70 or peak (before 09:30 on weekdays) for £13.20.
To print a two-page map, tube map on one page and central London bus map on the other, go here: http://tinyurl.com/25p633.
I'd allow an hour for the transfer time at Heathrow. The security restriction on carry-on bags has made things more complicated.
