We are taking a small laptop with us for the first time on our next flight. Please tell me exactly what I have to do with it when we go through security. Sorry if this is obvious, but I've never taken a laptop on a plane before.
You will be asked to take it out of whatever bag it is in and set it in a separate tray to go through the x-ray machine. That is all. No worries.
And don't worry about this. Thousand of people do this every day. I've done it 16+ times (8+ times each way) in ten years. One caveat, keep track of your computer. Make sure you get it on the other side of the scanner.
Have your batteries charged up. I've had to power my laptop up more than once in airport security.
Thanks everyone for the information.
Late to reply, but if you have a TSA approved computer bag/backpack, you are not required to take the computer out. You are allowed to leave it on its carrier in the bin. I have a nice Skooba bag that breezes through security. Bad thing is very little else fits- so not great if you are using your daypack to also haul clothes, 3-1-1 baggie.
