We're preparing to take our first trip to France. During the trip we'll be traveling from Nice to Paris on TGV. Should we be prepared for security checks like we encounter for air travel?
Rode the TGV a few months ago. There were no security checks.
No security checks.
No. The only security rule on domestic French trains is that if your bag is in a rack that is not directly over your seat it must have a label with your name and seat number on it. I've never seen it aggressively enforced, but best to do it in case someone complains.
No. Does that make you feel less safe?
Boy, I sure get annoyed with the bad people of this world. I just want to go to the airport and get on my airplane. Gallons of shampoo in the seat next to me...big, honkin' tube of toothpaste in the seat-back pocket, thermos of Mom's tomato soup in my carry-on bag...sharp and pointy ski poles in the overhead luggage compartment...Just like Andy and Aunt Bee...(IF they were into sticking toothpaste in the seat pockets, etc...) (sigh) Thanks, Flora, for indulging my mini-rant ;-) Only in some train stations in Spain are there any security checks; none in France. You only need to be there in time to climb into the train. IF your train tickets don't include reserved seats, you'll probably need to validate ("composter") your tickets BEFORE you get onto the train; look for a little yellow box, typically on the train platform somewhere - watch others, or ask if you're not sure. Otherwise, you may get hit with a stiff fine. Have a FABULOUS trip!!!
There are rules about which type of tickets that should be validated and which do not need. I don't bother about these. In France, I routinely stamp all tickets in the yellow boxes. I once forgot, and the conductor was certainly not happy about it. So Better safe than sorry. Railpasses is another procedure, of course.
