Seat selection on international flights

Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion on a good seat in Economy. I have the ability to pick an exit row seat in the center of the plane but was told that this row can get very cold and the seats did not recline as much as a regular row. Am I better off picking a non-exit row seat?

Thanks, Debbie

I'm short, so the extra leg room of an exit row seat doesn't matter to me. I like an aisle seat in the center section of the plane. It's easy to get up and move around without disturbing anyone else. Exit row seats usually go quickly, though, and on some airlines you pay extra for them, so if you want one you'd better act fast.

We have flown to Europe twice this year and reserved the exit rows whenever we could. The seats reclined as much as any others (though I recall other exit row seats on other flights that did not) and they were no colder than other seats (we'd read of that concern on other sites). I would imagine that it could vary with the aircraft...maybe(?) the airline could answer the reclining question. Good luck.

It's the seat in front of the exit row that typically can't recline. You don't want to be trying to get out the window exit with a seat back blocking your way. I would vote for exit rows every time you can get it. The space is worth it. Pam

Since I am usually travelling with my wife, we consider where the two of us will sit. We both fit well in just about any seat, so seating arrangement is more important. Best for us is the 2-4-2 seating on most 767s, that way we get a window and an aisle seat and have no one else to contend with.

On an international flight, I'd prefer reclining. As little sleep as I get on a plane, being able to recline helps a little. I cannot sleep upright :)

I prefer the window because I can lean against it :)

No one so far has mentioned www.seatguru.com. If you enter the airline and plane type you are flying on, seat guru shows the configuration of the plane and rates the seats. It's a reliable guide to help you decide which seats to choose. I like legroom behind a bulkhead or an exit row when possible. IMO every seat going to Europe is a good seat.

My worst experience was a last minute booking on American. I was literally in the last row in a seat that didn't recline. I still ended up in Europe so I wasn't upset.

Brad, you must have missed Michael's post from yesterday, above.

If I'm understanding correctly, the bulkhead is the area right in front of your seat where instead of another row of seats, there's a wall? If so, we requested that row on our recent trip w/Lufthansa for the very reason of more legroom. However, this area is where they also put families with infants/toddlers. For half of the flight (almost 6 hours), the baby bed was set up right in front of US (window/middle seat), not the mom who sat in the aisle seat. Our leg room disappeared completely and we had a fussy baby to contend with.

I prefer the center section, aisle seat. On my flight the center section had pockets of empty seats here and there. An aisle seat and an empty seat right next door would have been great.

Well I booked the exit room aisle seat for now. I am basically concerned that I won't be able to sleep without a window to rest against but I am not flying until September so I have time to change to a window seat if I need to. I checked seatguru.com before I posted but I don't get the same plane layout as on aa.com. Thanks for all your suggestions.

My brother is a frequent traveller, over 6' tall and has lower back problems. For him, leg room is paramount. He tries to get the exit row seat and if that's not possible he uses his points to upgrade to business class.

My husband is even taller. His flights are usually booked at short notice so that there is no way he can get the exit row seat. He then prefers an aisle seat in the middle (no money or points for business class available).

Since I travel with kids 90% of the time I'm not allowed to sit at the emergency exit. I always go for a middle row, aisle seat. As someone mentioned, there is a small chance that you get an empty seat next to you as well.

I hate window seats as my experience has been that they can get really cold. My kids love them though to put their head against it for a rest.

The only seats I've seen that don't recline much and that I really try to avoid are those in the very last row.
