Seat Selection on Iberia Airlines

Hi all,

I just booked nonstop flights from LAX-Madrid on Iberia Airlines via American Airlines' website. I upgraded my tickets to include "free seat selection" according to American's website, however when booking my flights I got the notice that seats would be assigned by Iberia.

I contacted American via their chat function to see if they could help me with seat selection and was told that the seats are under airport control at this time. I was told the gate agent would give us our seats.

This does not sound like "free seat selection" to me. Does anyone have any experience with Iberia or advice?

Thanks in advance.

Have you contacted Iberia? Presumably you have an Iberia booking code as well as the AA one, no?

Upgraded from what to what?

How far away is your flight? You should have a record locator number that is unique for Iberia in addition to you American Airlines record locator. Unless the flight is in the next few days or is quite full, you should be able to use the Iberia record locator to sign into their website and select seats.

I imagine the upgrade was from a basic economy fare to economy.

We were able to log into the Iberia website using our British Airways booking code and select our seats for our flights in February and our upcoming flight in April.

Thanks all!

We "upgraded" from Basic Economy to Main on American's website. I can log onto Iberia's website but all of the seats have a price attached to them. I don't see any way to select a seat for free. I've sent an email to Iberia and will report back.

From American Airlines:

Main Cabin:
Choose your seat at no charge (fee may apply for Preferred, Main Cabin Extra, or flights operated by another airline).

Since your flight is operated by another airline, Iberia, a code share, your seat selection at this time is not free.

If your flight was on American run flights, it would be free from time of purchase.

You may be able to select a seat for free when you check in, 24 hours before departure. The same holds true for BA tickets, bought from AA.

I would not call buying Main Cabin over Basic Economy an upgrade, since it is the same cabin, Economy.

What happened with this flight and seat selection? I have the same situation traveling in a few weeks. Were you able to choose seats free somehow? Did you have to wait till check in?

Hi Jillliz -- I ended up buying seats. They will assign them the day of but I did not want to take my chances on that.

CaliMom,
We are having the same issue getting seats on Iberia with our flight to Madrid coming up in September. So I was particularly pleased to see this thread started by you. You said that you ended up buying seats for your flight to Madrid, rather than wait for the "free" selection 24 hours in advance. We like to know well in advance where we are sitting. Less stressful, etc. Anyway, how did you buy your seats? Did you call Iberia and give them your Iberia code?

Hi GnomeTraveler,

I booked my airline tickets through American. But for my seats, I went onto the Iberia website with the Iberia flight number and found my flight. Once there, I could buy our seats. It was pretty easy and they were priced more reasonably than the US airlines.

Good luck and have a great trip!
